At Rocket Agency, we analysed Google search trends to uncover the most prominent Australians over the past 12 months, locally and worldwide.

Using a comprehensive and in-depth approach, we scraped the web including IMDb, Spotify, Wikipedia, social media, Google Trends, and more to ensure no notable Australians were missed. We then applied a blended search volume methodology using multiple tools to create the most accurate and complete picture possible and prevent tool biases. The result? A data-driven snapshot of who captured Australia’s attention in the past 12 months highlights fascinating trends, rising stars, and personal brands' impact in today’s digital landscape.

For marketers, these insights offer a unique perspective on audience interests, creating opportunities to engage with trending topics and develop campaigns that truly connect.

Summary of data analysed:

Key insights from the data

Before diving into the specific categories, let’s take a look at some overarching trends that defined search interest over the year:

  • Aussies love sport
In Australia, 4 of the top 10 most searched figures are athletes, led by Alex De Minaur and Sam Kerr. Globally, Hollywood dominates, with 9 of the top 10 most searched Australians being actors, led by Margot Robbie and Nicole Kidman.
  • Cultural icons hold steady
Heath Ledger remains the #7 most searched Australian worldwide, proving the lasting influence of iconic roles. Steve Irwin also remains in the top 50 searches locally and globally, showing enduring cultural relevance.
  • US politics overshadows Australian leaders
Donald Trump (283,000 searches) and Joe Biden (143,000) far outpace Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese (58,000), showcasing the dominance within Australia of American media and interest in American politics.
  • Social influencers don’t correlate across search
Despite massive social followings, this doesn’t always translate to the number of searches. Only 1 “Social Media Influencer” was in the top 50 Non-Australian and Australian searches, proving search interest remains driven by mainstream events.
  • Virality and TikTok
Rising figures like Rachael Gunn (Raygun) (#7 AU Growth) and Leah Halton, the 23-year-old TikTok star (#4 WW Growth), experienced rapid growth showing how a viral event or standout achievement can trigger significant year-on-year search spike.
  • Taylor Swift dominates
Globally dominant, Taylor Swift ranks as the #1 non-Australian searched in Australia, generating 300%+ more searches than any Australian.
  • Women’s sport on the rise
Sam Kerr (#5) and Mary Fowler (#16) lead a new wave of women’s sports interest, driven by the Matildas' success and growing media coverage.
