The state of fame in Australia: 2026 rankings

Who are Australia's most famous people right now?

A decade ago, the answer may have been relatively straightforward. Actors, musicians and sporting stars dominated public attention. Today, fame looks very different.

Content creators, influencers and digital personalities now sit alongside some of the country's most recognisable entertainers and athletes. In fact, creators account for 38% of Australia's 50 most famous people, showing the growing influence of platforms such as YouTube, TikTok and Instagram.

Yet the rankings also show that fame and public attention don't always go hand in hand.

The results reveal a changing fame landscape where audience size, public attention and cultural influence do not always move together. From global entertainers and sporting stars to YouTubers and streamers, fame in Australia no longer follows a single path.

Key findings

  • Rosé Is Australia's Most Famous Person
The BLACKPINK star ranked as Australia's most famous person, supported by a social media audience of more than 156 million followers and strong online visibility worldwide.
  • Content Creators Are Australia's Largest Fame Category
Content creators account for 38% of Australia's 50 most famous people, making them the largest profession group in the rankings ahead of athletes, actors and musicians.
  • Australia's Most Followed and Most Talked-About Names Barely Overlap
Comparing Australia's Top 10 Most Followed and Top 10 Most Talked-About rankings reveals just two overlapping names: Chris Hemsworth and Hugh Jackman.
  • New South Wales Produces Australia's Most Famous People
New South Wales dominates the rankings with 22 of Australia's 50 most famous personalities.
  • Sydney and Melbourne Produce Half of Australia's Most Famous People
Sydney (14) produces more famous Australians than any other city. This is followed by Melbourne (11) and Perth (5).
  • Athletes Climb the Rankings When Attention Is Measured
Oscar Piastri ranked 11th Most Talked-About but 43rd Most Followed. Daniel Ricciardo (22nd Most Talked-About vs 36th Most Followed) and Josh Giddey (19th Most Talked-About vs 39th Most Followed) showed a similar pattern, suggesting that sporting success continues to generate public attention beyond social media audiences.
  • Just 19 Cities and Towns Produced Australia's Top 50 Most Famous People
A total of 19 towns and cities produced all 50 names featured in the rankings, highlighting how concentrated Australia's most recognised personalities are.
  • Four Content Creators Made Australia's Top 10 Most Famous List
Four content creators ranked among Australia's Top 10 most famous people, including LazarBeam (Top #4), Caleb Finn (Top #6), Chloe Ting (Top #7), creators of How Ridiculous (Top #8).

Australia's 10 most famous people

Australia's most famous people aren't only actors, musicians and sporting stars anymore.

Four content creators rank among Australia’s 10 most famous people, including LazarBeam, Caleb Finn, Chloe Ting and How Ridiculous. Their presence shows that online reach now sits alongside film, music and sport as a major source of public recognition.

Fame isn't what it used to be

For decades, fame was largely controlled by television networks, film studios, radio stations and major record labels.

Today, fame is increasingly platform-driven.

Many of Australia's most famous personalities built their audiences online first, often attracting millions of followers before appearing in mainstream media. Content creators such as LazarBeam, Caleb Finn and Chloe Ting have built global audiences that rival those of traditional entertainers.

At the same time, some traditional celebrities continue to occupy a unique position in Australia's fame landscape. Chris Hemsworth and Hugh Jackman were the only personalities to rank among both Australia's Most Followed and Most Talked-About People, demonstrating that established stars can still command both large audiences and widespread public attention.

Current events also continue to shape who captures attention. Sporting success and major cultural moments remain powerful drivers of public conversation, helping explain why athletes, actors and musicians feature prominently among Australia's Most Talked-About People.

The result is a more fragmented fame landscape. Fame is no longer concentrated in film, television or music alone. It now exists across sport, gaming, lifestyle content and social media.

The rankings suggest that audience size, public recognition and public conversation are increasingly becoming separate measures of influence. While the people Australians know best are not always the same as those attracting the most attention, a handful of established stars continue to bridge both worlds.

What the findings mean for marketers

The findings show more than just who Australia's most famous people are. They reveal how attention is earned, measured and sustained across search, media and social, with practical lessons for marketers looking to build visibility.

Joe Alder
ROCKET AGENCY

“Marketers default to looking only at their own geography, but this data shows attention doesn't work that way. The culture, figures, and trends influencing Australian audiences are overwhelmingly global. If you're analysing your market in isolation, you're missing where the real influence is coming from."

Joe Alder, Head of SEO, Rocket Agency

Phoenix Douglas

Phoenix Douglas
ROCKET AGENCY

“While follower count shows long-term influence, it has become somewhat of a vanity metric over the years, with social platform algorithms favouring engagement over audience size. Today, relevance and the ability to consistently capture attention often matter more than having the biggest audience.

The number of content creators in these rankings shows how much the definition of fame has changed. Creators aren't just competing with traditional celebrities anymore, they're becoming them, because audiences are increasingly connecting with people who feel genuine, not just aspirational.”

Phoenix Douglas, Senior Paid Media Specialist and TikTok & UGC Lead, Rocket Agency

How Rocket Agency measured fame

To find out who Australians know, follow and pay attention to most, Rocket Agency analysed hundreds of Australian public figures across entertainment, sports, politics, business, digital media and more.

Celebrities included in this study are people who are Australian by citizenship or by upbringing, and identify themselves as Australian.

Each personality was assigned a Fame Score based on three indicators of public recognition and audience reach:

  • Global search volume
  • Online media mentions
  • Social media following (Instagram, TikTok and YouTube)

The final Fame Score was calculated using the following weighted formula:

  • Global search volume (35%)
  • Media mentions (35%)
  • Instagram followers (10%)
  • YouTube followers (10%)
  • TikTok followers (10%)

To identify Australia's Most Talked-About People, a separate Attention Score was calculated using:

  • Global search volume
  • Media mentions

This ranking was designed to capture current public interest and conversation rather than social media fame.

Additional analysis was conducted to identify trends by profession, gender, state and city.

Individuals were categorised according to their primary profession, including actors, athletes, conservationists, content creators, models and musicians. Where individuals were known for multiple professions, the category most closely associated with their public profile was used.

Gender classifications were based on publicly available information and how individuals openly identify. The analysis is intended to provide a broad overview of representation within the rankings and does not seek to categorise personal identity beyond publicly available information.

Creator groups, bands and multi-person entities were included in the overall rankings where relevant but excluded from gender representation analysis.

Data collection period: MAY 2025 - MAY 2026

Total personalities analysed: 200

Sources: Google Search, social media platforms, and online media monitoring tools.
